Day 0 - Christchurch Landing - Riverside Markets
30/12/2025 Day 0 - Christchurch - Riverside Markets
The day began well before sunrise — a 3:45 a.m. wake-up call followed by hurried showers, last-minute packing, and a brief moment of panic when the passports decided to play hide and seek. Somehow, everything fell into place, and we made it to the airport just in time. Huge thanks to Badri for getting us to Sydney Airport super fast yet super safe — no small feat at that hour!
We arrived early enough to enjoy a relaxed and delicious breakfast at the Qantas Lounge before boarding our Qantas flight. The journey itself was short and smooth, complete with upma for breakfast 🙂. The flight departed on time and landed in Christchurch around 12:30 p.m. local time.
After collecting our RAV4 rental, we checked into our Airbnb. The first surprise? Despite it being peak summer, Christchurch welcomed us with cold weather, strong winds, and a constant drizzle. Definitely not what we expected!
Hungry and ready to explore, our first stop was Riverside Market — and wow, what a place. It instantly reminded me of the Adelaide markets. Bursting with local eateries, cute cafés, and charming little shops, it felt like the perfect community hangout. The market sits close to the Remembrance Wall, adding a reflective touch to the lively atmosphere.
Naturally, we headed straight to Dosa Kitchen, where we enjoyed one of the best dosas ever, along with a delicious curry and rice. Fully satisfied, we strolled through the surrounding streets, stopping to take photos near the iconic Westpac building.
We wrapped up the evening with dessert at Sweet Soul, a lovely little café. My little one declared their soy hot chocolate the best ever, and the coffee and chai were equally impressive.
By then, exhaustion had set in. We headed back to our room, called it a night, and planned the itinerary for the next day — excited for what lay ahead.
